This week at Wave Hill

June 17, 2011

We agree that Father’s Day is big, and Pop will not feel neglected at Wave Hill on his special day. (Think birding, yoga and some family art time.)  But this week, I am afraid, even dads will be overshadowed by Make Music New York, a festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on June 21st, the first day of summer. We will welcome a dozen and half of New York City’s finest West African Griots – musician/storyteller/pot/historian “praise singers”, who will sing and perform on timbin flute, gambare lute, kora, guitar, balafon marimba and djembe.  Thanks to the generous support of Target, admission to the grounds will be free all day that Tuesday, and the music, taking place all afternoon will be free as well. Please let me know if you’d like a photo!

SUN, JUNE 19    THE SHOP AT WAVE HILL—TILONIA TEXTILES TRUNK SHOW

A small village in Rajasthan, Tilonia is home of the Barefoot College. Since 1972, the College has worked to improve the lives of the poorest of the rural poor, training them to become “Barefoot” professionals who develop their own communities. These semi-literate women and men become Barefoot solar engineers, water engineers, architects, teachers, midwives, paramedics―and craftspeople, creating, among other wonderful products, handcrafted bedding, accessories and gift products, now for sale through Friends of Tilonia, Inc. A social enterprise committed to the mission of the Barefoot College, as well as to eco-conscious manufacturing, fair trade principles and quality design, Friends of Tilonia offers an artisan collection featuring the block-printing tradition of nearly 800 artisans in villages where the College and its affiliates operate. Bring a hint of their vibrant traditions to your home with a selection of the stunning textiles offered at this weekend’s trunk show.
